CAFÉ NEWS
The School Nutrition Services Department continues to focus on serving nutritious freshly prepared meals using fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables as much as possible. We hope you will join us in helping your children make smart choices in foods as well when at home. Together we can raise a new generation of healthy young people.
What’s new for the upcoming 2011-2012 school year?
- Only 100 % whole grain or whole wheat products will be served!
- The following milk options will be served:
- Non-fat, low sugar chocolate milk
- Skim milk
- 1% milk
- Upgraded Fresh Bars serving
- Two fresh vegetables served daily
- Two fresh fruits served daily
- Mixed green salad or Caesar Salad served daily
- Can fruit and juice will be served less frequently to reduce the sugar intake.
- Only reduced sugar whole grain cereals offered for breakfast!
- Weekly fruit and vegetable nutrition education displays in the cafes!
- Healthier Ala Carte Snacks offered at the High School and Middle School
- Assorted nuts and dried fruits
- Whole grain snack items
- Fresh Fruits
- Fresh Vegetable
- Fruit and Vegetable Portions will be increased
- Kindergarten through 2nd grade will be increased from the current ½ cup combine fruit and vegetables to ¾ cup of vegetable and ½ cup of fruit.
- 3rd grade through high school will be increased from the current 1 cup combined to 1 cup of fruit and 1 cup of vegetable.
- Over 50% of the vegetables and fruit served will be sourced from local area farmers
- Starchy Vegetables (e.g. white potatoes, corn, and green peas) will be limited to 1 cup per week to encourage students to try new vegetables
