MMS Student Personal Communication Device Policy

Dear MMS Families,

As we begin the school year, we want to make sure all families are aware of Monroe Middle School’s expectations regarding cell phones, smartwatches, and other personal communication devices. These expectations align with Wisconsin Act 42 and School District of Monroe Board Policy 5136 and are intended to reduce distractions and keep our students focused on learning, relationships, and being present throughout the school day.

Our goal is not simply to remove phones. Our goal is to remove a significant distraction from the school day. We want students talking with one another, interacting with their teachers, participating in class, and focusing on the learning happening in front of them rather than notifications, messages, social media, or other digital distractions.

MMS Building Expectations

All cell phones, smartwatches, and other personal communication devices must be placed in the student’s locker at the beginning of the school day, powered off, and remain there throughout the entire school day.  The MMS school day is 7:55 a.m.–3:20 p.m. Monday–Thursday and 7:55 a.m.–1:20 p.m. on Fridays.

Traditional/analog watches that do not have internet or communication capabilities are permitted. Wearable devices used for purposes such as tracking steps may be reviewed by MMS staff to verify that they do not have internet or communication capabilities.

Students who require access to a device for an approved medical or health-related need will be permitted to do so. Appropriate accommodations will also be provided when required by a student's IEP or Section 504 Plan.

Consequences for Noncompliance

1st Offense: The device will be confiscated and held in the office/classroom until the end of the school day. The student may pick up the device after dismissal.

2nd Offense: The device will be confiscated and held in the office. A parent/guardian will be contacted and required to pick up the device.

3rd Offense: The device will be confiscated, and a parent/guardian meeting will be required. Additional consequences will be determined by school administration and may include school suspension.

This morning, all MMS students met with the MMS administrative team to review the new expectations, the reasons behind them, and the consequences for noncompliance.

We appreciate your partnership in discussing and reinforcing these expectations at home. By working together, we can reduce distractions and create an environment where our students are present, connected, and ready to learn.
