MMS Daily Chromebook check in/check out procedure
Dear MMS Families,
As we begin the school year, we want to make you aware of a change to how student Chromebooks will be handled at the end of each school day. Students will now leave their Chromebooks at school overnight rather than routinely taking them home.
There are several reasons for this change. Each year, a significant number of school-owned Chromebooks are damaged, including some that are damaged beyond repair. Keeping devices at school will help us reduce unnecessary damage and associated costs for the school and families. Additionally, we know that Chromebooks are being used outside of school hours to access non-school-related, inappropriate, or unsafe online content. Limiting routine access outside of school provides another layer of support in helping students develop healthy and responsible technology habits.
This change also aligns with our approach to homework. Students are provided time during the school day to complete their assigned work, and we want them to take advantage of that time. At the same time, we want to continue developing student agency and self-advocacy. If a student has a legitimate educational need to take their Chromebook home, they will be able to check it out for the evening. Chromebooks may also be checked out proactively for planned absences or after student absences due to unforeseen circumstances like illness.
How will the daily process work?
At the end of each day, students will leave their Chromebook in their 7th hour classroom. The following morning, students may enter the building beginning at 7:45 a.m., giving them 10 minutes to retrieve their Chromebook, drop off items in their locker, grab a nutrition break if needed, and arrive in Homeroom ready to begin the day at 7:55 a.m.
For students who need to leave school before 7th hour:
Students leaving for an athletic event will bring their Chromebook to their coach/supervisor who will store it overnight in a Chromebook cart.
Students leaving early for other reasons will bring their Chromebook to the main office for overnight storage.
This morning, all MMS students met with the MMS administrative team to review the new expectations and the reasons behind them.
Our goal is not simply to keep Chromebooks in the building. We want to protect school resources, support safe and appropriate technology use, and encourage students to advocate for themselves when they need access to their device outside of the school day.
As with any new procedure, we will monitor how this works and make adjustments when necessary. Thank you for your partnership as we work together to help our students develop responsible habits while ensuring they have the tools they need to be successful.
